Wyoming Cowboys Prepare for BYU Cougar Classic: The Wyoming Cowboys will compete in their final regular-season tournament of the 2001 spring season this coming Friday and Saturday, April 20-21 at the Brigham Young Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah. Wyoming last competed on April 2-3 at the Campbell University Intercollegiate in Buies Creek, N.C. UW shot the low round of the tourney at the Campbell Intercollegiate on Tuesday, April 3, and vaulted from a tie for ninth place into a tie for fourth place. UW's round of 287 was not only the best round of the day, but was the best round of the two-day 36-hole event. Wyoming ended with a final 36-hole score of 590 to tie with Charleston Southern for fourth place. North Carolina-Wilmington won the team title with a final score of 585. Wyoming was led by senior Jake Hunter and freshman Mike Mezei, who both tied for sixth place, out of 68 competitors, with two-round totals of 145. Mezei shot the low round of the day for the Cowboys with a two-under par round of 70 on Tuesday. His round of 70 also tied for the low individual round for the two-day event. Hunter fired a final round of 72 -- even par. Brent Parrish of North Carolina-Wilmington won the individual title with a 36-hole score of 142. Parrish won a playoff with John Hulwick of Denver for the individual championship. All five members of the Cowboy squad shot 74 or lower in Tuesday's final round. Junior Mike Urbatchka shot 71 on Tuesday and finished tied for 25th at 149. Senior David Hearn fired a 74 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 35th at 151, and sophomore Kurt Kowaluk also shot a 74 and tied for 42nd at 152. "We played really well on Tuesday" said UW head golf coach Roger
Prenzlow. "It was nice to see the guys play a solid final round. Mike
(Mezei) shot a 70, Mike Urbatchka a 71 and Jake Hunter a 72. David Hearn
and Kurt Kowaluk also played nice rounds (both shot 74s). Overall, we were
a very balanced team."
