LARAMIE, Wyo. -

University of Wyoming Director of Men's and Women's Golf Joe Jensen announced today that Cowboy freshman Corey Steger is ineligible to compete in the upcoming Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship.

During the current semester Steger mistakenly failed to maintain full-time academic status, which resulted in an inadvertent secondary NCAA violation, preventing him from competing in the MWC tournament. Steger's scores were also withdrawn from the Cowboys' previous two events when his academic status was part-time. As a result, UW placed 15th as a team at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, April 10-11, and 14th at the BYU Cougar Classic, April 14-15.

"There was an honest mistake made by Corey to drop a class," said Jensen. "This will be a hard lesson and an unfortunate one, because Corey had been playing well enough to be considered for MWC Freshman of the Year, and he is a good student, with a 3.4 GPA this past fall. We'll look forward to having Corey back next season and contributing to this team for three more years."
