August 4, 1999 LARAMIE, Wyo. -
David Hearn, who will be entering his junior season at the University of Wyoming in the fall of 1999, has qualified for the United States Amateur Golf Championship to be played at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif., Aug. 16-22. Hearn was the No. 1 qualifier at the Highland, Mich. District Qualifier. He shot rounds of 76-67 for a 36-hole total of 143. Hearn will be one of 312 amateur golfers competing in the 99th Annual U.S. Amateur. "This is a great accomplishment for David (Hearn) and a very positive step for our program," said University of Wyoming men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "The U.S. Amateur brings together the top amateur golfers in the country. It will be exciting to see how David plays in this elite field, and it will be interesting to see how he handles one of the country's most challenging courses." The competition will begin with two 18-hole rounds of stroke play -- one on Monday, Aug. 16 and the second round on Tuesday, Aug. 17. The two rounds of stroke play will be contested on Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course. The top 64 players from the stroke-play portion of the competition will advance to match play. Match play competition begins on Wednesday, Aug. 18 and continues through Sunday, Aug. 22 at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Initiated in 1895, the U.S. Amateur is the oldest of the United States Golf Association (USGA) Championships. This year's competition will mark the fourth time the U.S. Amateur will be played at Pebble Beach. It was also played at Pebble Beach in 1929, 1947 and 1961. The 1961 event saw Ohio State University senior Jack Nickalus win the U.S. Amateur title. Hearn is coming off an outstanding sophomore season at the
University of Wyoming, placing seventh in the 1999 conference championships
and finishing 17th at the NCAA West Regional.
