Cowboys Win 2000 Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate, Hearn Finishes Second: The University of Wyoming men's golf team won the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate by ten strokes Sunday, with senior David Hearn placing second individually.

The Cowboys shot a 54-hole total of 848 at Jacoby Golf Course in Laramie. Wyoming was trailed by Idaho, which shot 858. Wyoming has now won three consecutive Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate titles.

The Pokes were led by Hearn, who lost a playoff for the championship against Jarod Topmiller of Western Kentucky. Hearn and Topmiller each finished with a three-round total of 207, but Topmiller birdied the fifth playoff hole to earn the individual title. Hearn fired rounds of 70-65-72 on the par 70 course.

Wyoming received a very solid performance from junior Mike Urbatchka. Urbatchka, a native of Sheridan, Wyo., finished in a tie for third with a total of 209, including a final round 69.

Rounding out the scoring for Wyoming were Kurt Kowaluk (216), Jake Hunter (220) and Mike Mezei (223). Kowaluk's total earned him a tie for tenth place. Mezei was impressive in his first action as a Cowboy.

"The guys did a good job of hanging in there," said Wyoming head coach Roger Prenzlow. "We didn't have a good round going but really made up for it at the end. We struggled with our putting, but you could really tell that we had some experience out there. I really commend our guys, they hung in there until something good happened and they shot well enough to win.

"David (Hearn) just wasn't David today," added Prenzlow. "He never really got going but still tied for the championship. It's too bad he didn't get his name on the trophy again, but he's got a great year ahead of him.

"It's great to have a home tournament to get things started. It gives us an opportunity to get some confidence and shoot some good scores. We have some young guys who are going to be good players for us, and this is a good way to get them started."

The next action for the Cowboys is Sept. 15-16 at the Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
