Cowboy Golf Team Remains in Second Place After Second Round

Sept. 20, 1999

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The Wyoming Cowboy golf team maintained its second-place position after the second round of the Air Force Falcon Invitational on Saturday, but Saturday saw host Air Force join them in a tie for second place. UW shot a second round 295 to hold onto second position in the 24-team field entering Sunday's final round. The Pokes still trail leader Notre Dame. The Irish extended their lead by four shots from day one, and now hold a 12-stroke lead over UW and Air Force.

Wyoming's low individual of the day was junior Jacob Hunter, who shot a 71 to move into a tie with teammate Reid Lende for 26th place. Lende posted a 75 on Saturday. Fellow UW junior David Hearn shot a 74 on Saturday and is tied for seventh, while sophomore Mike Urbatachka shot a 76 in the second round and is tied for 18th. UW's other player, Kevin Kayden, shot a second round 75 and is tied for 80th.

"Our team did an excellent job of battling today, despite the fact we couldn't seem to make the big putts," said UW men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "Everytime we looked like we were about to make a run, a putt would lip out. It just seemed like there was a blanket over the cup for us today.

"Jake (Hunter) really played a nice round today. The rest of the guys played well, but just couldn't get the putts to fall. It's a pretty good sign of the quality of team we have when you can shoot a 295 (only seven over par) and feel like you didn't had a very good day. Tomorrow hopefully we can start off fast and see if we can put a little pressure on the Irish for the team title."

The third and final round will be played on the Eisenhower-Blue Course on Sunday in Colorado Springs.

The Eisenhower-Blue Course measures 7,301 yards and plays to a par of 72.
