LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The Wyoming Cowboys sit in second place after the first round of the Air Force Falcon Invitational completed on Friday despite delays due to lightning and fog. UW shot an opening round 283 to earn second position in the 24-team field entering Saturday's second round. The Pokes trail leader Notre Dame by eight strokes. Wyoming's David Hearn opened with a four-under par round of 68 and is tied for fourth -- two shots off the leader, Todd Vernon of Notre Dame.

"The team did an outstanding job today, shooting a five-under par round of 283," said UW men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "We had a couple of delays today due to weather, and actually ended up taking about eight hours to complete one round of golf. David Hearn played his typical outstanding round, hitting some great golf shots and converting a lot of putts. Mike Urbatchka stepped up and played a great round today, and Reid Lende also stepped in there and put up an outstanding score today.

"If we continue to get this kind of play from all five guys, we'll have a pretty good chance to win on Sunday, and that's our goal."

Urbatchka shot a first round 69, and is in a group of six tied for sixth. Lende was the third Cowboy to shoot a sub-par round with a one-under 71 on Friday, putting himself in a tie for 17th. Also playing for Wyoming is Jacob Hunter, who is tied for 57th with a score of 75, and Kevin Kayden, who opened with a 78 and is tied for 95th.

The tournament is still on schedule as only one round was scheduled for Friday. The second round will be played on the Eisenhower-Blue Course on Saturday, followed by the final 18-hole round on Sunday.

The Eisenhower-Blue Course measures 7,301 yards and plays to a par of 72.
