Cowboy Golf Team Posts Strong Finish at Oregon Duck Invitational, UW's David
Hearn Finishes Fifth:
The Wyoming Cowboy golf team played one of their best
tournaments of the 1999-2000 season on March 20-21, placing seventh in a
15-team field at the University of Oregon Duck Invitational. Wyoming
finished with a 54-hole total of 887, tying with Colorado State for seventh
place. The University of Washington won the two-day event with a final
score of 857.
Wyoming was led by junior David Hearn, who tied for fifth place with
a three-round total of 214, two-under par. Hearn's finish marked the fourth
time in nine tournaments this season that he has placed in the Top 10
individuals, and the fifth time he has placed in the Top 15. UW sophomore
Mike Urbatchka also played an outstanding tournament, shooting 222, six-over
par, to tie for 31st in the field of 80 golfers
"Everyone on the team contributed to this strong finish," said UW
men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "We looked like the team we were in the
fall season. We had two individuals shoot rounds in the 60s (Hearn and
Urbatchka), and all five guys shot at least one round in the low 70s.
"David (Hearn) continues to be impressive. He held the lead after
the first 36 holes with rounds of 68 and 70. He fell back a little bit on
Tuesday with a 76, but he couldn't have played much better. Everyone on the
team shot a nice round of golf. Mike (Urbatchka) had a round of 68. Kevin
(Kayden) and Jake (Hunter) each had a round of 72, and Reid (Lende) shot a
73 in the second round.
"This was a good tournament for us because we beat some teams in our
district that we needed to in order to have a chance to qualify for the
NCAAs at the end of the year."
The 54-hole event was played on the Shadow Hills Country Club-Silver
Course in Eugene, Ore. The course measured 6,783 yards and played to a par
of 72.
