High School... Gifford was a Nebraska State Champion and was named First Team All-State for the fourth consecutive year his senior season. He placed second at the State Tournament in both his sophomore and junior years and sixth as a freshman. Gifford was Second Team All-Region his first three years and First Team All-Region his senior year. He was also named team captain. Excelling in football as well, Gifford was All-Region and All-Conference his senior year, and as team captain led his team to the State Playoffs for the third year in a row. He was academic All-State in both football and wrestling his junior and senior seasons.
