Helbig asserted himself as UW's starter at 197 during the 2010-11 campaign with a West Regional title and a trip to the NCAA Championships. He went 22-15 overall and 9-9 in duals to go with eight major decisions and four pins. He was 10-1 against the WWC. Helbig's season ended with losses to No. 8 Matt Powless of Indiana and Anthony Biondo of Michigan at the national tournament, but that didn't sour a season of success for him. Helbig claimed his first West Regional title with a dominant performance at the event. He pinned his first two opponents, before claiming a 14-4 major decision over Northern Iowa's Andy O'Laughlin, who had earned a major decision against him just two weeks earlier. The win clinched the team title for Wyoming and gave Helbig first-team All-WWC honors. Helbig opened the season with an individual title at the Northwest Open, before finishing second at the Cowboy Open. He failed to place at the Kaufman-Brand Open and Reno Tournament of Champions, before crafted an eight-match winning streak during the dual season. 2009-10: During his redshirt freshman year, Helbig competed at both 197 pounds and heavyweight, but it was his contributions at the big-man weight class after the first of the year that made his season a memorable one. Entering the final matches at the 2010 NCAA West Regional in the heavyweight division, the `Pokes trailed the Northern Iowa Panthers by a half point. The Panther's Christian Brantley won his match, but so did UW's Helbig, only Helbig pinned his opponent which gave Wyoming the necessary bonus points to jump in front of UNI to end the night, sealing the team title for Wyoming. Helbig placed third at the event to earn third-team All-WWC accolades. Helbig finished the year with a 20-15 record, five of those wins came by way of fall. He started the season by placing first at the Northwest Wyoming Open at 197. Helbig had three dual wins at heavyweight, helping his team fill a void, and he had an overall record of 6-3 against Western Wrestling Conference opponents. South Dakota State's Tyler Sorenson was ranked No. 10 in the country at 197 when he faced Helbig in Reno. Helbig would beat Sorenson, 6-5. He was a huge factor in helping his team win the 2010 West Regional team title, as well as the 2010 WWC Regular Season Dual team title. 2008-09: Helbig was impressive at 184 pounds as a redshirt freshman, going 22-8 in open events. He posted six wins by fall and three by major decision. The highlight of the year for Helbig was when he won the amateur division at the Cowboy Open, with three wins by fall and one by major decision. He also placed second at the Utah Valley Open and fourth at the Omaha Open. High School: Helbig was a two-time Michigan State Champion, going undefeated both his senior and freshman seasons at Mason High School. He was a NHSCA Sr. All-American and took first place at the NHSCA National Championships in Myrtle Beach S.C., as well as being named a two-time Mid-Michigan Dream Team selection. Prior to his senior year, Helbig was ranked #1 in the state of Michigan and #14 in the nation at 189 pounds. He helped lead Mason to back-to-back state championships, the first time in school history. Personal: Helbig was born on July 28, 1989 in Lansing, Mich. He has an older sister, Brianna, and his parents are Dave and Leesa. L.J. is a social science major at UW. He was born deaf and has a cochlear implant in his left ear to assist with hearing. |
