Alfonso Hernandez

2010-11: Hernandez redshirted the 2010-11 season and did not compete in any open tournaments after having back surgery. In the classroom, he was named to the WWC Coaches' Honor Roll.

2009-10: Hernandez started for his second straight year and saw action as a sophomore at both 197 and heavyweight. He continued to improve and his overall season record was 22-16.

The 2010 NCAA West Regional was bittersweet for Hernandez. He entered the event seeded No. 2 at 197, but suffered a shocking loss in the opening round. Alfonso battled back in the consolation bracket with his first pin of the season, then followed that up with his second win by fall of the year. Having seen his chances of qualifying for nationals go south in the first round, a frustrated Hernandez then beat No. 3 seed Dustin Bauman (UNI) by decision, 9-3. He placed third with the win and won the tournament's Most Pins award and third-team All-WWC honors.

Those back-draw wins and the bonus points he scored were vital to the `Pokes winning the 2010 West Regional team title. Hernandez also played a big part in UW winning the 2010 Western Wrestling Conference Regular Season Dual team title.

He placed third at the Cowboy Open and sixth at Reno.

Named to the WWC All-Academic team, Hernandez posted a perfect 4.0 GPA in the spring of 2010.

2008-09: A raw talent, Hernandez was immediately thrust into the Cowboy line-up at 197 pounds as a true freshman. He placed third at the West Regional tournament, earning Third Team All-WWC honors, and forced a true second place match for a trip to the NCAA Tournament, losing in a competitive effort.

His overall record was 23-19, 8-8 in duals and 3-4 in the WWC. Hernandez recorded two pins, four major decisions and got a key win for the Cowboys against Cal State Fullerton (6-3) to help secure a team dual win.

He was diligent in the classroom at UW, being named to the WWC Coaches' Honor Roll.

High School: Hernandez was a two-time Idaho state champion, once at 189 and once at 215. He placed fifth as a sophomore and took third at the Junior Nationals in Virginia Beach, Va. Hernandez was a NHSCA Jr. All-American. As a senior, Alfonso was ranked as high as sixth in the nation by Intermat.com and collected 106 wins in his high school career. He only began wrestling as a freshman. Hernandez was a four-time letterwinner in wrestling, three-time letterwinner in track and a two-time letterwinner in football at Blackfoot High School. He graduated with a 3.7 GPA, was a member of the National Honor Society and was Student Body Activity Manager.

Personal: Alfonso was born on Nov. 24, 1989. He is the son of Alfonso Hernandez and Lori Galvan. He married his wife Stephanie on Aug. 16, 2008, in Blackfoot, Idaho. They are the proud parents of a son, Aiden, born on February 22, 2009. Hernandez is majoring in kinesiology and health promotion at UW.
