Matt Johnson enters his 15th year at Wyoming and his sixth as the top assistant. Johnson will be involved in all aspects of the Cowboy program.

Johnson, 37, brings a tremendously successful collegiate background to the Cowboy program. While wrestling for Iowa State University he won three Big Eight titles and earned three All-American honors in the 177-pound weight class. Johnson notched one second-place finish and two fourth-place finishes at the NCAA Tournament. At the 1991 NCAA Tournament Johnson won the Gregorian Award for pinning three opponents in 15:15 while advancing to the title match at 177-pounds. During his career he compiled a 120-27-1 record, including two 30-win seasons. Johnson also participated in three National Wrestling Coaches All-Star Meets, recording a 2-1 record. His three invitations is a Cyclone record. Internationally, Johnson has finished in the top seven in the U.S. Open Freestyle Tournament three times.

A native of Brighton, Colo., Johnson won two Colorado State Championships and four freestyle titles. Johnson finished high school with an overall record of 114-19. Johnson also finished second at the Junior Nationals in 1988.

Johnson graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1996 with a degree in history. Johnson married his wife Jodi in August of 1998. The couple have three daughters, Sarah Marie (6), Rylie Lynn (4) and Katelyn Rose (1).
