03/07/2011 2011 West Regional Wrestling TournamentPhotos of the Wyoming Cowboy wrestlers at the 2011 West Regional tournament. 3/6/11 2010-11: One of only two seniors in the lineup during the 2010-11 campaign, Matthew (Bubba) McLaughlin wrestled to a 12-7 overall and 3-5 dual record. He collected six pins and one major decision while going 8-3 against the WWC. McLaughlin finished second at the West Regional to end his season, as he did not earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. He went 2-1 at the event with his only loss coming 3-1 to No. 15 Christian Brantley of Northern Iowa. The effort earned him second-team All-WWC honors. McLaughlin started his season on a positive note by winning the Northwest Open and placing third at the Cowboy Open with a combined 6-1 record. He struggled down the stretch of the dual season, but did pick up dual wins over Utah Valley, South Dakota State and Northern Colorado. 2009-10: In his first season at UW after transferring from Rend Lake College, McLaughlin was the Cowboy heavyweight during the first part of the season. He had an 11-9 record before being declared academically ineligible in early January. Prior to that point he had two wins by fall, placed second at the Cowboy Open and sixth at the Body Bar Classic. After he lost his eligibility, he competed in one open tournament, going 3-0 with two pins and winning the Utah Valley Open. Rend Lake College: McLaughlin attended junior college for two years in Rend Lake, Ill., where he was a back-to-back NJCAA All-American heavyweight. He placed sixth at the National Junior College Athletic Association wrestling championships as both a freshman and sophomore for the Rend Lake College Warriors. High School: McLaughlin graduated from Murphysboro High School in 2007. There he was a two-sport letterwinner in both football and wrestling. As a senior he placed third at the Illinois State Wrestling Championships. McLaughlin was also a two-time All-Conference and All-South Region wrestler. In football he played both offense and defense, earning All-Conference honors twice on both sides of the ball. Defensive tackle was his best position, where he was Honorable Mention All-State and All-South Region. Personal: Born Sept. 12, 1988 in Murphysboro, Ill. Matthew is the son of John and Charlotte McLaughlin. He has two sisters, Laura and Morgan. His major at UW is rangeland ecology and watershed management. |
