2008-09: Alex Rieder was one of the biggest surprises on the Cowboy team during his junior year. He improved dramatically and became a team leader by the end of the season, starting at 165 pounds and posting an overall record of 27-16. Twelve of his wins were by fall, three by major decision and he had one technical fall. Rieder began the year at 174 pounds, but then dropped to 165 part-way through the season. At 165 pounds he started 14 duals for the `Pokes, going 8-6 and placing second at the West Regional/WWC Championship. Rieder gave all he had but lost in the finals to No. 5-ranked Moza Fay of UNI, the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. That finish earned him Second Team All-WWC honors. Rieder had several other big wins for the team during the year, including key victories over Cal State Fullerton and Columbia opponents. Another season highlight was his third place finish at the Cowboy Open. He won a prestigious honor for his training efforts, one of only three UW student-athletes given the National Strength and Conditioning Association All-America Strength and Conditioning award.

2007-08: As a sophomore, Rieder moved up a weight class and had a record of 1-4 at 165 pounds.

2006-07: In his second year, Rieder saw time at the 157 pound division and recorded a 4-13 overall record with two pins and one technical fall.

2005-06: Rieder was 4-12 overall for the `Pokes and recorded three pins. He redshirted.

High School: Rieder was a Colorado All-State wrestler from Paonia High School his senior year and a three-time All-Conference selection. He was a four-time letterwinner in both wrestling and track and field, and a three-time letterwinner in football. Rieder was also selected as team captain all four years of high school in wrestling.
