Grapplers 1-1 After Day One at Virginia Duals

The Wyoming Cowboy wrestling team took one of two Friday at the 2004 Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va. Wyoming opened the tournament with a loss to top-ranked Purdue 19-17 but fought back to defeat Lockhaven by a score of 25-9. The Virginia Duals is one of the largest college wrestling tournaments in the world and is hosted by The Peninsula Wrestling Association. This year's tournament features some of the best collegiate teams in the nation. The Cowboys could face many top-ranked teams as #3 Lehigh, #6 Nebraska, #10 Arizona State, #19 Wisconsin, #20 Purdue and #22 Edinboro are competing in the two-day tournament. The Pokes picked up their first dual win of the season in their consolation match against Lockhaven late Friday afternoon. Wyoming took eight of ten matches against the Bald Eagles for a 25-9 victory. The Cowboys got on the board early with three match wins in the lower weights jumping out to a 9-0 lead. 125 pounder Bryce Leonhardt took care of Jim Collins 8-4. In the 133 pound bout Tyson Shatto out scored James Barnes 8-2 and senior Blake Gunter got by Chad Goldrick 4-3 at 141 pounds. Lockhaven got one of their two victories at 149 pounds as

Shuler defeated Charlie Brennenman by a 8-2 decision. Senior
Trevor Murray followed suit by recording a 12-2 major
decision over Dave Beard and redshirt freshman Josh Prevost
won his 174 pound match against Dan Riggs 5-1 to give
Wyoming a 19-6 lead.
Mike Greenburg of Lockhaven was too much for Wyoming sophomore Sam Wendland taking the 184 pound dual 5-1. UW would finish with two more victories in the 197 and 285 pound matches. Junior Malcolm Havens defeated Eric Ponce 3-1 at 197 and sophomore Dusty Hoffschneider prevailed 9-3 over Steve Itterly at heavyweight giving UW the 25-9 victory. "Our guys wrestled pretty tough today," said Wyoming head wrestling coach Steven Suder. "Andrew Shuler, Trevor Murray, Blake Gunter, Bryce Leonhardt and Tyson Shatto were all 2-0 on the day. They wrestled solid and got us some big victories. My hat goes off to them for how hard they fought today." In their first round match the Cowboys jumped out to a 10-0 lead on the No. 21 ranked Purdue Boilermakers, taking the first three matches by a combined score of 25-8. Bryce Leonhardt got the Cowboys off to their great start by defeating Sean Smaltz in the 125 pound bout by a major decision, 10-2. At 133 pounds, Tyson Shatto made the score 7-0 with an overtime victory over Chase Beebe. The Douglas, Wyo., native scored the only takedown of the match in the extra frame prevailing 2-0. Senior Blake Gunter put the Pokes up 10-0 with a 13-6 victory over Ben Sprunger. Gunter shutout Sprunger in the second and third periods while scoring ten points in the final two frames. Purdue got on the scoreboard in the 149 pound bout as Dan Jankowski outlasted UW's Patrick Shuler 4-1, making the score 10-3. Wyoming would go onto win the next two matches as senior Andrew Shuler got past Brad Harper on a much needed riding time point 2-1 and 165 pound senior Trevor Murray handled Bryce Markley in a 11-2 major decision. With the score 17-3 the Pokes looked to be on their way to the second round, but the Boilermakers stagged a comeback taking the final four matches prevailing 19-17. With the win over Lockhaven, Wyoming advances to the next round of the consolation bracket. The Cowboys will take on No. 22 ranked Edinboro at 8 a.m. on Saturday at the Hampton Coliseum. Edinboro defeated Old Dominion in the first round but fell in their next dual against No. 11 Arizona State. |
