Wyoming Wrestlers Defeat Eastern Illinois 21-15
Jan. 14, 2001 LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming wrestling team defeated Eastern Illinois on the road Sunday 21-15. The Cowboys earned points in five of the ten weight classes and were helped out by a pin and a forfeit. Senior Craig Rumsey moved his record to 12-7 on the year with a fall over Ross Bracey at 5:46. Eastern Illinois was ahead in the dual 15-12 heading into Rumsey's match and with his pin the Pokes took an 18-15 lead, a lead they would never give up. Rumsey has been impressive in the month of January as his win against Bracey gives him a 4-0 record for the month. In the final individual match of the dual sophomore heavyweight Brad Steele defeated B.J. Bertelsman 9-3 to seal the victory. With the win, Wyoming moved its dual record to 3-3 on the season. Wheatland, Wyo., native Mark Hamrick also moved his record to 12-7 with an 8-4 win over Joe Gassen. Hamrick's win in the 149 pound class gave Wyoming a 12-3 lead after four matches. At 141 pounds Cowboy sophomore Thad Trujillo defeated Shawn Slenozka 7-2. Trujillo notched his fifth win of the season with the victory. The dual started at 125 pounds where Wyoming received six team points as Eastern Illinois was open and had to forfeit the match to UW's John Faczak. Individual match results: The dual was held at Lantz Gymnasium in Charleston, Ill., before a crowd of 464. With the loss Eastern Illinois has a dual record of 1-4. The Panthers will be one of six teams competing in the West Regional in Laramie on March 3. The next action for the Pokes will come Jan. 20 when they dual Northern
Iowa and Marquette in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
