The Missouri Tigers showed why they are the No. 9 ranked team in the nation Friday night in Laramie by winning their 11th-straight dual match of the season 30-9, over the Wyoming Cowboys. The Pokes were able to score three victories over Missouri, who had seven of its 10 wrestlers nationally ranked in their respective weight classes.

The Tigers, undefeated at 11-0, put the Pokes in a deficit right off the start by winning the first three matches of the night to take an early 13-0 lead. Missouri's Scott Barker, ranked seventh in the nation, defeated UW freshman Malcolm Havens at 197, No. 15 ranked Kevin Harron beat Cowboy heavyweight Brad Steele 9-0 and Mark Bader took care of Cowboy sophomore Reynold Candelaria 20-3.

Wyoming got on the board at 133 pounds when senior Kelly McConville (17-8) won a close match over Chris McCormick, 3-0. The two battled through two scoreless periods before McConville scored a reversal in the third, followed by a point for a riding time advantage at the conclusion of the match.

Senior Mark Hamrick, from Wheatland, Wyo., brought the Cowboys to within 13-6 after he defeated 18th-ranked J.P. Reese in another shutout, 5-0. Hamrick (17-8) scored a takedown at the end of the first period, a reversal in the second and was awarded a riding time advantage to claim the victory.

Missouri would go on to win the next four matches to take a commanding 30-6 lead. At 149 UW junior Thad Trujillo kept things close with ninth-ranked Jeremy Spates, but eventually fell 6-1. Missouri's Kenny Burleson scored a technical fall over Jason Waneka at 157, with a dominating 21-6 win. The Tigers won the 165 pound match by forfeit. Wyoming redshirt freshman E.K. Waldhaus nearly upset No. 7 ranked John Kopnisky in the 174 pound match but couldn't score a takedown in the final seconds of the third period which would have sent the match to overtime. Kopnisky won a very close match by a score of 5-3.

In the final match of the night at 184 pounds UW sophomore Kevin Kessner, from Rock Springs, Wyo., won a hard fought match by a score of 6-4 over Missouri's Dante Stone. Kessner scored a takedown early in the first period to take a 2-0 lead and never looked back. Stone tied the match at 2-2 in the second after an escape but Kessner countered with two more takedowns to close out the match. Kessner's season record now stands at 13-7 on the season.

"Everybody really battled tonight, nobody went out and gave up," said UW head coach Steven Suder. "I thought our guys competed hard and I was proud to sit in out corner. We lost to a tough team, beat a couple of their top guys and scared a few others so that's a positive for us from this match.

"We had four guys who went out there are really competed well against some solid opponents. I was very proud of Kelly (McConville), Mark (Hamrick) and Kevin's (Kessner) performances. I was also very pleased with E.K.'s (Waldhaus) match. He wrestled an extremely tough guy to a two point loss and almost a draw. I've seen his opponent really crush people this season but E.K. shut him down." Suder said.

With the loss the Cowboys season record falls to 3-8. Things don't get any easier for Wyoming as they will hit the mats against a tough Boise State team on Jan. 25, in Boise, Idaho.
