Wyoming Wrestlers Defeat Marquette, Fall To Northern Iowa

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming wrestling team competed in a pair of duals Saturday, defeating Marquette 50-0 and losing to Northern Iowa 30-6.

Against Marquette the Cowboys earned team points in all ten of the weight classes. Wyoming had three pins, one technical fall and three forfeits in the victory. Mark Hamrick, Steven Schenk and Craig Rumsey all pinned their opponents. Hamrick pinned Andy Zychowicz at the 2:45 mark to give Wyoming a 20-0 lead after four matches. Schenk pinned Mike Kratz and Rumsey pinned George Flanek at 6:00 in a dominating performance by UW. Freshman Reynold Candelaria won by technical fall 19-5 over Paul Bugenhagen in his first varsity action of the year. Thad Trujillo, Chad Plummer and Kevin Kessner all won their matches by decision.

Wyoming won two individual matches against #19 Northern Iowa. At 133 pounds junior Kelly McConville scored an upset when he defeated #17 Chad Boudreaux 3-0. With his win, McConville pulled the Pokes to within three points at 6-3 after two matches. At 149 pounds Mark Hamrick won his match over Keith Weber 7-3, again pulling Wyoming to within three points (9-6). But the Cowboys didn't win any more matches as the Panthers pulled away to win 30-6.

The matches took place in West Gym at Cedar Falls, Iowa before a crowd of 721. With the win and the loss Wyoming now has an overall record of 4-4. The next dual for Wyoming will be Jan. 26 in Laramie against Cal State-Fullerton at 7:00 p.m.
