Pokes Take Two Hosting Cowboy Duals

The University of Wyoming wrestling team hosted the 2004 Cowboy Duals in the MultiPurpose Gym in Laramie on Saturday. The Pokes battled two of the top junior college programs in the country in Western Wyoming Community College and Northwest College. In their first dual the Cowboys defeated the Spartans of Western Wyoming by a score of 38-9. Wyoming took eight of ten matches, including two forfeit's by the Spartans at 125 and 157 pounds. Sophomore Tyson Shatto took care of Lyle Evans of Western Wyoming 7-1 in the 133 pound match to put the Cowboys on top 9-0. UW senior Blake Gunter followed with pin over Mark Fisher in 2:20 to make the score 15-0 in favor of Wyoming. In the 149 pound match sophomore Patrick Shuler won his match by a technical fall at 6:16. Shuler recorded five takedown's and two nearfall's in the match for a 18-2 victory. Western Wyoming would pick up their two victories in the 165 and 174 pound bouts. Nick Larsen of the Spartans put down UW's Trevor Murray at 165 pounds, taking the match 4-3. At 174 pounds Mike Casperson caught Josh Prevost off guard taking the bout by pin at 2:58. Cowboy Sam Wendland improved UW's lead to 29-9 with a victory at 184 pounds. Wendland shutout Luke Kjar of Western Wyoming 5-0 for the victory. In his first match of the season, senior Kevin Kessner wasted no time with
Western Wyoming's Bryce Murray. Kessner took the 197 pound match via pin
at 3:14. Kessner has been out with an injury since the beginning of the
season.
Heavyweight Dusty Hoffschneider capped off the dual with a 7-3 decision over John Fager of the Spartans. Hoffschneider scored on two takedowns in the third period to seal the victory and make the final score 38-9 in favor of the Cowboys. The Pokes faced the Northwest College Trappers in their second dual, the Trappers are currently ranked No. 1 in the junior college ranks. Wyoming took eight of ten matches from Northwest for a 33-6 victory. Bryce Leonhardt got the Cowboys on the board early with a 7-4 decision over Northwest's Seth Wright 7-4 in the 125 pound match. Northwest would answer in the 133 pound bout as Patrick Sharp defeated Wyoming's Tyson Shatto by a 7-3 decision, tieing the score at 3-3. Senior Blake Gunter out-scored Erik Sabot of Northwest at 141 pounds by a 5-2 decision. Gunter scored on two escape points in the final three minutes to put the Cowboys on top 6-3. Wyoming's Patrick Shuler edged Luke Salazar in the 149 pound match by a score of 3-2. Shuler scored his three points in the first period and then defended his lead for the victory. At 157 pounds redshirt freshman Gary Dack made his first appearance in the Cowboy lineup a good one by defeating Cort Petersen by pin in 3:34. Senior Andrew Shuler wrestled up in the 165 pound division and collected Wyoming's fifth match win. He defeated Kade Caturia by pin at 5:54. Shuler had a 17-5 lead over Caturia before taking the match by fall. Cowboy senior Trevor Murray only needed one escape point in the final period to win the 174 pound bout for the Pokes. Murray scored the only point of the match against Northwest's Trevor Moss for a 1-0 victory. The Pokes would take the next two matches at 184 and 197 pounds. Sophomore Sam Wendland was too much for Pete Julander taking the bout by a 8-3 decision. Kevin Kessner picked up his second pin on the day defeating Jess Holmgren in 1:34 at 197 pounds. Northwest picked up their second match win in the heavyweight match as Tyler Rhodes defeated Dusty Hoffschneider 4-1, making the final score 33-6 in favor of Wyoming. The Cowboys will be in action next on Jan. 30th when they travel to Portland, Ore. to take on Portalnd State. |
