Cowboys Edge #22 Oregon State 17-16

Corvallis, Ore. -- The Wyoming Cowboy wrestling team defeated its second Pac-10 opponent in as many days with a 17-16 dual victory over the #22 ranked Oregon State Beavers Saturday at the Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore. Wyoming defeated Portland State on Friday by a score of 45-0. With the win against OSU, the Pokes improve their dual record to 6-3 while the Beavers are now 8-5 on the season. Oregon State took and early lead to start the dual at 184 pounds. Dan Pitch of Oregon State defeated Cowboy Sam Wendland by a 9-1 major decision to put the Beavers up early 4-0. Wyoming would tie the match at 4-4 when senior Kevin Kessner shutout Curt Willener of OSU by a 8-0 major decision. Kessner picks up his fourth straight with the victory since returning to the Cowboy lineup last weekend. In the heavyweight bout, No. 18 ranked Dusty Hoffschneider fought his way to a 4-3 decision over Jamie Rakeich. Hoffschneider was down 3-2 with only :25 left in the final period before scoring the deciding takedown of the match and prevailing for his fifth win of the season. Sophomore Bryce Leonhardt won his fifth match in a row with his 3-2 decision over Eric Stevenson of Oregon State. An escape point in the final 1:15 proved to be the match point in the 125 bout for the Casper, Wyo. native. Leonhardt is undefeated on the season in dual matches with a 8-0 dual record. The Beavers would close Wyoming's lead to 10-7 with a victory in the 133 pound division. Tim Norman of OSU defeated UW's Tyson Shatto in overtime by a score of 7-6. No. 19 ranked Blake Gunter recorded his fourth major decision of the year with a 11-2 win over Kyle Larson of the Beavers in the 141 pound match. Gunter's victory put the Pokes ahead 14-7 and improves his record to 19-6.
After an Oregon State victory at 149 pounds, UW senior Andrew Shuler,
ranked No. 18 in the country, would pick up Wyoming's fifth match
win of the dual in the 157 pound bout. Shuler defeated No. 20 ranked
Tony Hook of Oregon State with a 6-4 decision. Shuler's win improves
his team leading record to 20-5.
The Beavers would come back in the final two matches on the night. OSU's No. 12 ranked Matt Ellis defeated UW's Gary Dack in the 165 pound bout by a score of 10-4 and No. 15 ranked Jed Powell defeated Cowboy Trevor Murray at 174 pounds by a 10-3 decision. The comeback fell short as the Pokes prevailed with a 17-16 win. The Cowboys will be back on the mat Friday, Feb. 6th when they play host to Northern Colorado at 7 p.m. in the Multipurpose Gym. |
