Wyoming Wrestlers Defeat Southern Colorado 27-13
Feb. 3, 2001 LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Wyoming won six of the last eight matches on their way to a 27-13 victory over Southern Colorado in Pueblo, Colo., on Saturday. The Cowboys fell behind 7-0, but rebounded to win the next four matches to take a commanding 18-7 lead. After losses in the 184 and 197 pound weight classes, Wyoming won the last two matches to preserve the victory. Wyoming heavyweight Brad Steele recorded the only pin of the day when he defeated Doug Smith at 2:22. The fall gave UW a 24-13 lead with only one match remaining. With the win, Steele moved his record to 19-12 on the season. Senior Steven Schenk recorded a technical fall in his 174 pound match by defeating Phil Dawes 16-0 at 4:30. Schenk, who has been in and out of the national rankings all year, pushed his record to 17-11. Freshman Levi Prevost had an impressive victory at 157 pounds by recording a major decision over Vail Minn 14-2. Mark Hamrick won his 19th match of the year with an 8-2 victory over Sam Melendrez at 149 pounds. Hamrick, a junior, leads the Cowboys with his 19 wins. Complete dual results: Wyoming moved its dual record to 6-4 overall, having won six of their
last seven duals. The Cowboys will face a stiff test next Saturday when
they travel to Air Force to dual with the Falcons at 7:00 p.m.
