LARAMIE, Wyo. - The No. 24th ranked Wyoming Cowboy wrestling team extended their dual win streak to five with a 30-13 victory over the Northern Colorado Bears Friday night at the MultiPurpose Gym in Laramie. Wyoming took seven of ten matches, including two by pin and three via major decision. The victory improves the Pokes overall record to 7-3 on the season while the Bears drop to 2-6.

After a Wyoming forfeit at the starting weight class, 141 pounds, Northern Colorado jumped out to an early 9-0 lead over the Cowboys when UNC's Dustin Uhland defeated Wyoming's Patrick Shuler in the 149 pound match. Shuler was down early in the match, but was able to tie the score late in the third period with a takedown to force the match into sudden victory overtime. Neither Uhland or Shuler managed to score a point in the sudden victory period and the match moved to a :30 tiebreaker. It took two first score tiebreak periods before Uhland scored an escape point at 8:38 to win the match 8-7.

The Pokes would win the next seven consecutive matches en route to their fifth straight dual win. Senior Andrew Shuler, ranked 17th in the nation, got Wyoming on the board in the 157 pound bout. Shuler defeated Mikell Surber of UNC 17-6 for the four point major decision. The victory marks Shuler's team leading 21st of the season.

At 165 pounds, senior Trevor Murray for Wyoming took care of Northern Colorado's Matt Archbold. Murray scored four points in the first minute of the match with a clean takedown and a two-point near fall. The LaPoint, Utah native then scored another takedown in the second period and an escape point in the third period along with the time advantage to prevail for a 8-2 decision.

Redshirt freshman Josh Prevost for the Cowboys won in dramatic style at 174 pounds against Northern Colorado's Alex Joseph. Prevost muscled his way to a takedown at :10, a three point near fall at :23 and won the match by fall at :43. The pin is Prevost's fourth of the season.

UW's Sam Wendland put the Cowboys up 16-9 with a victory in the 184 pound bout. Wendland scored eight points in the final period to win the match 13-6. The win improves the sophomore's overall record to 12-11.

No. 16 ranked Kevin Kessner won his fifth consecutive match since returning to the Cowboy lineup three weeks ago with his 10-2 major decision over UNC's Reece Hopkin. Kessner allowed just one escape point against Hopkin as Kessner was penalized for stalling in the second period. The Rock Springs, Wyo. native has battled his way back into the lineup after an early season injury to boast three wins by major decision.

Sophomore Malcolm Havens, a 197 pound wrestler, filled a void at the heavyweight spot for the Pokes on Friday. Heavily outweighed, Havens showed why he is one of the hardest working guys on the team by taking the match by fall against Matt Sens of Northern Colorado at 4:10. Havens' victory increased Wyoming's lead to 26-9.

Cowboy Bryce Leonhardt picked up Wyoming's seventh match win of the night in his 125 pound contest. Leonhardt defeated Kyle Kaiser of the Bears by a 15-6 major decision to extended his team leading winning streak to 12. A native of Casper, Wyo., Leonhardt is now tied for the second best record on the squad with a 19-3 standing.

The Bears got their second victory of the dual in the last match of the evening. UNC's Kyle Swensen won a 11-3 major decision over Tyson Shatto of Wyoming. The Northern Colorado victory made the final score 30-13 in favor of Wyoming.

"We didn't know too much about these guys (UNC) but we did know they were going to give us a tough go of things," said UW head wrestling coach Steven Suder following the victory. "I was pleased with a lot of things I saw tonight. I saw some progress in some of our younger guys that are not usually in our lineup and they got the job done."

Wyoming will be back on the mat Feb. 13th when they travel to Boise, Idaho to face the Boise State Broncos at 7 p.m.
