LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Wyoming jumped out to a 20-0 lead and never looked back in racing to a convincing 31-10 win over Portland State Friday night in Laramie.

The Cowboys won the first five matches before Portland State notched a win to put the score at 20-4. The Pokes then had a pin by Craig Rumsey and a technical fall by Brad Steele to push the cushion to 31-4.

The first match of the night was at 141 pounds where sophomore Thad Trujillo defeated KC Banks 16-2. The victory pushed Trujillo's overall record to 9-7. Next at 149 pounds Mark Hamrick notched his 21st win of the season with a 9-3 victory over Robert Lynn.

Freshman Levi Prevost had a solid win against Eric Arbogast at 157 pounds. Prevost outscored Arbogast 11-7 in an impressive victory that gave UW a 10-0 lead. Justin Christenson extended Wyoming's lead with a 15-6 victory over Chris Parker at 165.

UW senior Steven Schenk then won his 174 pound match by forfeit before the Vikings would score any team points. Portland State earned its first victory at 184 pounds where #17 Jeremy Wilson defeated Cowboy freshman Kevin Kessner 11-3. For Wilson it was his 26th win of the year.

Wyoming then put together two outstanding wins at 197 and heavyweight. Craig Rumsey won his 197 pound match by fall over Randy Davidson. Rumsey pinned Davidson at the 6:03 mark. Sophomore Brad Steele won his heavyweight match over Joe Johnson by technical fall with a score of 20-4 at the end of the second period.

Portland State would go on to win the final two matches but the outcome was already decided. With the win Wyoming moved its dual record to 8-5 on the season before 331 in attendance.

"We knew that they were coming in here with some real solid guys," said Wyoming head coach Steven Suder. "I think that all of our guys made good choices out there and this is the time of year we need to do that. We may be hitting our stride about this time and that's the plan, this is when we need to perform our best. But we face a whole different test tomorrow."

The Cowboys return to action on Saturday when they host #16 Fresno State in the Arena-Auditorium at 12:00 p.m.
