Feb. 17, 2001
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
On senior day in Laramie Wyoming's two seniors won their matches in a 31-7 loss to #16 Fresno State on Saturday. Steven Schenk and Craig Rumsey each won their final home dual matches as Cowboys. Schenk won his 174 pound match 9-1 over Mike Mellor. Schenk raced out to an 8-0 lead in the first period and finished the match with a win. Rumsey defeated Tom Gohde 9-4 in the 197 pound match. Rumsey led 5-1 going into final period and had two takedowns in an impressive victory. After Rumsey's win Fresno State led the dual 10-7, but the Bulldogs reeled off two pins to push the lead to 22-7. With that lead Fresno State won the final three matches, including an overtime win and a one-point victory. The dual took place in the Arena-Auditorium. Wyoming finished the season with an 8-6 dual record. Now the Cowboys will prepare for the West Regional, which will be held March 3 in Laramie. "There were three matches that could have gone either way, and none of them went our way," said Wyoming head coach Steven Suder. "But there were plenty of good things that happened out there for us. We didn't wrestle that bad, we just got beat by a better team. Now we'll get ready for the regional and we'll be as ready as we can be for it." Complete dual results:
