Cowboy Wrestling Falls To Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 25th ranked University of Wyoming wrestling suffered a disappointing loss Friday night in Fresno, Calif. falling to Fresno State by a final score of 18-17. Wyoming took five of ten matches from the Bulldogs including two by major decision, but a UW forfeit at 149 pounds proved to be the deciding factor in the loss. Wyoming moves to 8-5 with the defeat and has dropped two of its last three duals. The Bulldogs move to 7-11 with the victory. The Cowboys started strong and got out to an early 8-0 lead as seniors Andrew Shuler and Levi Prevost defeated their opponents. Shuler, ranked 16th in the country, defeated Shane Seibert of Fresno State by a 12-4 major decision in the 157 pound match. No. 13th ranked Levi Prevost took down Sean Sheets by a major decision, 13-5, for the early lead. After Bulldog victories at 174 and 184 pounds UW senior Kevin Kessner, ranked 11th, increased Wyoming's lead to 11-6 with a 4-1 victory over No. 10 Marcio Boteho of Fresno State. The Bulldogs would respond by taking the heavyweight and 125 pound matches. No. 7 Clint Walbeck defeated No. Dusty Hoffschneider of Wyoming 3-1, while Christian Bowerman of FSU took down UW's Barrett Duell by a 7-3 decision. Cowboys Tyson Shatto and Blake Gunter picked up Wyoming wins in the 133 and 141 pound bouts. Shatto won by a 10-5 decision over Joe Stewart of the Bulldogs. Gunter picked up his 21st victory of the season with a 4-0 shutout of Ben Martinez making the score 17-12 in favor of the Pokes. Fresno State would earn their final six points via a Wyoming forfeit in the final match at 149 pounds, making the final margin of victory 18-17. The Cowboys will go for their ninth dual win of the year Saturday when the take on UC-Davis at 8:00 p.m. in Davis, Calif.
