Cowboys Can't Corral Falcons in 22-16 Dual Loss
Feb. 27, 2002
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
In the final dual of the 2001-2002 season, in his final match as a Cowboy and in the final match of the night, Cowboy senior Kelly McConville managed one final win in front of the home crowd. In a very close match, McConville was able to hold off Air Force's Andrew Peters 1-0, giving him his 58th career victory on senior night. McConville's effort wasn't enough however as the Air Force Academy Falcons (10-3) were able to get by Wyoming 22-16, at the MultiPurpose Gym in Laramie. The Cowboys (5-11) won four matches against the Falcons including one pin and one major decision. Wyoming fell behind 8-0 after the first two matches, losing both the 141 and 149 pound matches by major decisions. At 141, UW redshirt freshman Cody DeGroot fell to Chris Bennett 11-2. DeGroot was starting in place of usual starter, senior Mark Hamrick, who was held out of the match due to an illness. In the 149 pound match Cowboy Thad Trujillo wasn't able to do much against No. 15 ranked Scott Frohardt, losing 13-4. Wyoming began battling its way back starting with sophomore Levi Prevost in the 157 pound match. Prevost, ranked No. 20, jumped all over AFA's Blaine Brown, recording five takedowns and one near fall on way to his 15-3, major decision victory. The win cut the Falcon's lead in half at 4-8. Losing 3-1 with :15 left in the 165 pound match, UW's Justin Salas scored a takedown and a near fall as time expired to pull out a thrilling 7-3 win over Samuel Sheretz. The win brought the Pokes to within one point, 7-8. Air Force would take a four point lead on the heels of a slim one point win at 174 pounds. AFA's Terry Perham just edged Wyoming's E.K. Waldhaus, 4-3, gaining an additional point at the end of the match for riding time advantage. The Pokes would take the lead 13-11, after the 184 pound match when UW
sophomore Kevin Kessner pinned Josh McCrary just :32 into the match.
Kessner attacked McCrary from the start scoring a quick takedown before
recording the pin. The pin was the second of the season for Kessner.
In a very tight matchup, Cowboy freshman Malcolm Havens took Ryan Kaiser into overtime in the 197 pound match before Kaiser managed a takedown :41 into the one minute overtime period to take the win 4-2. The win give Air Force its second one point lead of the night at 14-13. Air Force built on its lead in the heavyweight match when 10th ranked Kevin Hoy took down Brad Steele 13-4. With the match tied at 4-4 early in the third period, Hoy went on to score two takedowns and two near falls to score the major decision win. Air Force widened its lead to 18-13 with the victory. With the dual still in doubt and two matches remaining, Air Force put a dagger in the Cowboys hope for a win when Heath McKim scored a major decision victory over Reynold Candelaria, 8-0 in the 125 pound match. The win gave the Falcons a 22-13 lead heading into the final match of the night. McConville's win at 133 made the final score 22-16 in favor of Air Force. "We were expecting a whole bunch of tough matches and that's what we got," said Wyoming head coach Steven Suder. "They weren't only tough matches but tough matches against a very strong team. The good thing to take out of this match though is that I feel like some of our younger guys are really starting to learn how to battle and tasting what it means to make some real conscience decisions on the mat. Air Force brought a tough team in here in, my hat's off to them." The Cowboys will next compete at the 2002 West Regional in Fresno, Calif., on March 9. The regional will qualify wrestlers for the NCAA Championships. Last season Wyoming placed third at the six team regional, qualifying three wrestlers for nationals. Complete Results: |
