LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Senior Levi Prevost and sophomore Dustin Hoffschneider were the only Cowboys to win their opening matches at the 2004 NCAA Wrestling Championships on Thursday in St. Louis, Missouri.

A native of Sidney, Montana, Prevost earned a 10-2 victory over Dustin Kawa of North Carolina State in the 165 pound weight class. He fell to Nick Passolano of Iowa State in the second round, 14-4, and will now face Craig Piquignot of Millersville in the consolation bracket. Hoffschneider opened up his day with an 8-6 victory over Marc Allemang of Duquense, but came up short, 3-2, against Greg Wagner of Michigan. On Friday, he will go up against Bill Stouffer of Western Michigan.

At 141 pounds, senior Blake Gunter (Green River, Wyo.) had a tough first round match as he fell to the number one-seed Scott Moore of Virginia, 11-3, as did Kevin Kessner (Rock Springs, Wyo.) against the top seed Damion Hahn of Minnesota, 12-4, in the 197 weight class. Kessner moved on in the consolation bracket after beating Jeff Clemens of Michigan State, 13-8, and will face Matt Monteiro of Cal Bakersfield on Friday. Unfortunately for Gunter his tournament is over as he fell to Joey Rivera of Boston University, 2-1, in the consolation bracket.

Sophomore Sam Wendland came up just short of moving into the next round with a 5-4 loss to Jake Rosholt of Oklahoma State. He also came up short in the consolation bracket as he fell to Nick Ciarcia of Brown, 9-4. Andrew Shuler was also defeated by Ryan Bertin of Michigan 14-5, in the opening round, but came back with a 10-5 win against Mike Kimberlin of Northwestern in his consolation round match.
