Wyoming Wrestlers Finish Competition at Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite

Las Vegas, Nev. (December 6, 2003) -- The University of Wyoming wrestling team wrapped up competition at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite Saturday in Las Vegas, Nev. The Cliff Keen tournament is one of the largest collegiate tournaments of the season. Wrestlers from over 40 colleges and universities were featured in the two day invitational, which was held at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Two Cowboy wrestlers finished in the top ten of their respective weight classes. Senior Levi Prevost won his first two bouts at 165 pounds on Friday before being defeated by 4th ranked Matt King of Edinboro 3-1. Prevost responded on Saturday by defeating three straight opponents including No. 5 in the nation John Clark of Ohio State 9-4. Prevost was defeated in the consolation championship 3-1 by Shawn Silvis of Central Oklahoma.

Another senior, Blake Gunter, was the other Poke grappler to finish the tournament strong. Gunter won four matches to earn seventh place. He defeated No. 16 Tommy Owen of Minnesota 3-0 in his seventh place match. Gunter improved his season record to 12-5.

Three other Cowboys also turned in quality performances. 125 pound sophomore Bryce Leonhardt won his first three matches on Friday but suffered an injury in the quarterfinals and was forced to default out of the tournament. Sophomore Tyson Shatto wrestled through the 133 pound bracket picking up three wins, two by major decision. In the 157 pound division No. 13 ranked Andrew Shuler picked up three wins in the tourney before being defeated by 9th ranked Brian Stith of Arizona State 3-2 in the fifth round of the wrestlebacks.

The Cowboys will next be in action Dec. 29-30 when they travel to Evanston, Ill. for the Midland Championships.
