LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Wyoming's Sam Wendland and Carter Downing were named to the Western Wrestling All-Conference team for the 2006-07 season earlier this week. Individuals earned their spots on the respective teams with their finish at the 2007 NCAA West Regional on March 3.

Wendland earned his first West Region title his sophomore season in the 184 pound weight class. After redshirting last year to move up a weight, Wendland dominated the 197 pound weight class this year winning the Cowboy Open, finishing the WWC with a 4-0 record and winning his second NCAA West Regional Title. He finished the year 15-3 with two pins, two technical falls and three major decisions.

Downing won his second straight West Regional Title at the 149 pound weight class. He dominated his weight class as well this year finishing the WWC with a perfect 5-0 record and a 32-9 overall record. Downing led the Cowboys in all scoring categories with three pins, five technical falls, nine major decisions and winning 12 of his last 14 matches.

The 2006-07 season marked the inaugural year of the Western Wrestling Conference which is comprised of seven schools including, Air Force, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, Utah Valley State and Wyoming. The conference was formed in April 2006.
