Wyoming Wrestling Program Signs Malcolm Havens
April 20, 2001 LARAMIE, Wyo. -
University of Wyoming head wrestling coach Steven Suder has announced the signing of Malcolm Havens of Ponderosa High School in Parker, Colo., to a national letter-of-intent. Havens placed second at the 5A Colorado State Championships this past season at 215 pounds. He finished the season with an overall record of 39-1. Havens also placed second as a junior with an overall record of 36-4. As a sophomore Havens finished third at 215 pounds with a record of 32-5. Havens finished his three-year career with 69 pins, including 28 his senior season. In each of his last three years at Ponderosa High School Havens earned the Most Falls and Most Takedowns Awards along with earning the most team points of any individual wrestler. Havens was coached in high school by Tim Ottmann. In the spring of 2001 Havens won the senior freestyle division at the Rocky Mountain Regionals in the 213 pound weight class. Havens placed second at the prestigious Western Junior Regionals in Las Vegas, Nev., this April and also placed fourth at the Reno Tournament of Champions in December. At the University of Wyoming Havens plans to study kinesiology. He is the son of Dan and Laura Havens. "Malcolm is a great addition to our program for several reasons," said
Wyoming head wrestling coach Steven Suder. "He is very serious about
his academics, he trains year-round and he is always looking for his
next challenge. He adds quality, experienced depth to our upper
weights, which will benefit him as well as the rest of the athletes in
the program."
