LARAMIE, Wyo. -

University of Wyoming redshirt freshman Michael Martinez and assistant coach Ben VomBaur qualified for the U.S. World Team Trials which will be held June 9-10 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Both Martinez and VomBaur wrestled at 121 pounds (55 Kilos).

"This is a great accomplishment for both guys," head coach Steven Suder said. "Both trained very diligently over the past two months to earn this bid to the World Team Trials."

Martinez qualified at the U.S Open in Las Vegas, Nevada during the first week of April and VomBaur qualified last Saturday in the Northern Plains Regional in Waterloo, Iowa. VomBaur defeated Martinez in the final round of the regional to qualify for the World Team Trials.

"As a redshirt freshman, Michael (Martinez) placing in the top six is a reflection of his work ethic and the way he competes," Suder continued. "For Ben (VomBaur) to complete the kind of work that is required to win a regional tournament and continue to accomplish his tasks as a coach of this team is an incredible reflection of his tenacity"

There are four ways to qualify for the U.S. World Team Trials; athletes must be a current World Team Member, which means you are the one of the top six wrestlers in the country at your weight, place in the top seven at the U.S. Nationals Open in Las Vegas, win or medal at one of the few select international competitions, or win one of the two regional tournaments (Northeast or Northern Plains).

"The opportunity for these guys to represent the University of Wyoming is a feather in our cap and we are extremely proud of them."
