In the wrestle-back round, Hamrick lost to Scott Bair of Lock Haven 16-2. Hamrick entered the tournament with a 24-11 record, and he had been nationally ranked all year in the 133 pound weight class. Already a graduate, Hamrick is nearing completion of his master's degree at Wyoming. The season is now complete for the Wyoming wrestling team. The Cowboys were 8-8 in duals this season and placed sixth at the Western Regional on March 4. The Pokes will welcome the return of five starters to next year's squad.
Suder's Word: The following are quotes from University of Wyoming head wrestling coach Steven Suder after the NCAA Wrestling Championships: "I'm very proud of Corey's accomplishment's this season. He is the true epitome of a Cowboy, both on the mat and off of it. Although he wasn't as successful as he hoped, he represented the University of Wyoming well."
Outlook for 2000-2001: Wyoming will return five starters next season. Mark Hamrick (149), Steven Schenk (174), David Schenk (184), Craig Rumsey (197) and Brad Steele (HWT) will all return to the Cowboy lineup next season. Rumsey and S. Schenk will be seniors, Hamrick will be a junior and D. Schenk and Steele will be sophomores. A talented class of redshirt freshman will also give Cowboy fans something to look forward to. Wyoming to Qualify at Western Regional: When UW joined the Mountain West Conference, that changed the way the Cowboys will qualify for the NCAA Championships. With only three MWC teams with wresting programs, the conference doesn't sponsor the sport. Wyoming qualified for the national tournament by competing in the Western Regional, which was held March 4 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Also competing in the Western Regional along with Wyoming were Air Force, Brigham Young, Fresno State, Eastern Illinois, Marquette and Northern Iowa. With a total of seven teams in the regional, there were 22 NCAA qualifiers selected at the regional as compared to 17 at past WAC Tournaments.
Hamrick Nationally Ranked: In the March 1 InterMat Top 20 individual
rankings, Wyoming had one nationally ranked wrestler. Corey Hamrick
was ranked #19 in the 133 pound weight class. Hamrick entered the NCAA
Championships with an overall record of 24-11. With his two losses at
nationals, Hamrick finished the his senior season 24-13.
