Dec. 2, 1999

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

University of Wyoming head wrestling coach Steven Suder has announced the signings of Reynold Candelaria, of Laramie High School in Laramie, Wyo., and Justin Salas, of Green River High School in Green River, Wyo., to national letters of intent.

Candelaria was the Wyoming State Champion at 112-pounds in 1999 and finished in third-place his freshman and sophomore years at 103-pounds. As a three-year starter, Candelaria has an overall record of 85-18 entering his senior year at Laramie High School.

Also an excellent student, Candelaria has been an honor roll member. At UW, he intends to major in physical education, with hopes of becoming a teacher and coach. For the Cowboys, he projected to wrestle in the 125-pound weight class.

"This is home to me," said Candelaria. "All that I need and want is right here in Laramie, so why go anywhere else. I really liked the coaches and the entire wrestling program. It is a different level of wrestling, and I look forward to a new challenge."

Candelaria was also recruited by Stanford and Lehigh. He is the son of Don and Toni Candelaria.

Salas has an overall record of 67-11 entering his senior season of competition. He won the state championship as a sophomore at 140-pounds and placed second last year at 145. This season, Salas will wrestle at 160-pounds for the Wolves. At Green River High School, Salas is coached by former Cowboy wrestler Bill Hodges.

With an interest in becoming a teacher or counselor, Salas will study education at UW. At the collegiate level Salas is projected to wrestle at either 157 or 165 for the Pokes.

"I wanted to stay in Wyoming," said Salas. "I like outdoor activities and Laramie has lots to offer. It is close to home and I'm comfortable here."

Salas is the son of Bernard and Kellie Salas.

"It seems just right, very natural for these guys to be a part of this team," said Suder. "We've had the chance to watch these guys, we know about the programs they come from and the backgrounds they have. All of this adds up to a real excitement about what they’ll bring to Wyoming team."
