During that time, he amassed a 97-37 overall record. His teams won five consecutive Mount Hood Conference Championships, made three Oregon State Activities Association State Tournament Appearances and two third place trophies. Central Catholic was recognized by the OSAA in 2009 and 2010 for having one of the top team grade point averages. In five years as head coach, Petrino had nine players continue their basketball careers in college. For his efforts, Petrino was selected the Mount Hood Conference Coach of the Year three-times and the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association All-Star Coach in 2008 and 2011. In 2010, Petrino was invited to coach at the Nike Global Challenge which features some of the best high school players in the country. Previous to that, he was the Junior Varsity and Assistant Varsity Coach from 2001-2006 at Central Catholic.

Off the court Petrino, along with Jeff and Bev Heller, started the inaugural David Heller Hoopfest in 2006. The event honors David Heller, a former player for Central Catholic, who died one week before starting his first varsity game of an enlarged heart. All proceeds from the event go to the David Heller Foundation, which helps fund cardiac screenings for high school athletes.

A native of Montana, he earned his degree in secondary education in 1999 from Montana State Billings. Petrino and his wife, Kelly, have a daughter Jamieson.
