Sept. 8, 2004

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming women's golf team began their 2004-05 season on Tuesday and finished second in a one-day, tri-team competition with a score of 311. Denver placed first (293) and Northern Colorado third (323) at the Highlands Ranch Golf Club in Denver.

"We had a pretty good day today," said head UW women's golf coach Jill Rettinger. "Overall, for us to come out and play as well as we did for the first time out, with freshman jitters and start of the year jitters, was great."

Freshman Laura Mengelkamp (Dover, Pa.) led the Cowgirls in her first collegiate action by shooting an even-par round of 72. Mengelkamp placed third individually. Fellow freshman Lindsay Bauknecht (Vienna, Va.) was next for Wyoming with a round of 78. Also competing for UW was Michelle Camaione with a round of 80, Whitney Hernandez scoring 81 and Shala Hanson with 83. Each team played five golfers and counted the four best scores.

The Cowgirls begin tournament play September 13-14 at the 54-hole Colorado State Ram Fall Classic in Fort Collins, Colo. at the Ptarmigan Golf Club.
