Darren Toohey will be entering his third season as a volunteer coach for the University of Wyoming. Last season Toohey worked primarily with the goalkeepers and his efforts showed with Freshman goalkeeper Courtney Merkle who started every game during the season and set a record for most minutes played in a season earning 5 suhutouts and had a goals against average last year of 1.00 (second all time at Wyoming). The previous year Toohey worked with Senior goalkeeper Jamie Scarcliff who also set several Wyoming records including #1 all-time in goals against average and #2 all-time in single season shutouts. This year Toohey will continue to work with sophomores Merkle, Megan Burke and freshman Carmen McDermott. Toohey brings a wealth of experience as both a player and a coach to the game of soccer. Prior to Wyoming Toohey had been the assistant coach at the highly successful Mesa Community College women's soccer team. During his three years at MCC, the team was ranked in the top 15 of the nation every week for all three years and had a 56-12-4 (.780) record during that time. While at MCC, Toohey was also voted the NSCAA Assistant Coach of the Year for the West Region of the U.S. Prior to MCC, Toohey was the assistant coach and goalkeeping coach for the Arizona Heatwave, a women's semi-pro team that competed in the W-League. Toohey helped guide the Heatwave to their first ever playoff game and also filled in as acting head coach on several occasions. He also was the assistant coach for the Scottsdale Community College women's soccer team for two years and was previously the head goalkeeping coach for the Arizona Olympic Development Program. Toohey has also directed the goalkeeping camps at the University of Notre Dame and at the University of Texas and he has been on the coaching staff for the Grand Rapids Explosion of the USISL. During his coaching career Toohey has worked with 15 college All-Americans, 2 National Team players and 5 of his former players are now coaching at the NCAA DI level. He has also coached various club and high school teams and most recently helped lead the Highland High School boys soccer team to an Arizona High School State Championship. Toohey has also written and directed an instructional soccer coaching video designed specifically for goalkeepers. As a player, he has played throughout the world. Toohey represented Australia on the National Indoor Soccer (Futsal) Team on the U20, U23 and Men's National team. While playing for Australia he competed in Brazil, Russia, Argentina, and Uruguay. He finished his National Team career with a game against the USA during an international tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He also played soccer for the Grand Rapids Explosion (Michigan) in the USISL as well captaining Belconnen United and Shamrock Rovers in the Australian Capital Territory Premier League. He also played for the ACT Academy in the Australian National Youth League. While in Australia he was selected to the National College Soccer team. Toohey also played three years of college soccer (Hope College, MI & Hiram College, OH) and led his nationally ranked teams to three NCAA appearances finishing his college career with a 44-9-2 Record (.800) in games played. At Hope College, Toohey captained the team his final year and was also named most valuable player and was named NSCAA All-Region in all three years of college. While earning his Masters Degree at Arizona State University, he captained the men's club team to a National Championship in 1999. Toohey earned a B.A. from Hope College, MI in 1998 majoring in Sociology & Criminology. He earned his MBA with a Supply Chain Management concentration from Arizona State University in 2000 and he graduated in 2009 with a Masters in Organizational Leadership from the University of Denver. |
