Laramie, Wyo. - The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team improved their Mountain West Conference record to 4-0 by shutting out the Air Force Falcons 2-0 on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Laramie, Wyo. UW is now 9-6 on the season and tied for the conference top spot with Utah.

The Falcons and Cowgirls ended the first period in a 0-0 deadlock. Air Force managed to get off seven shots to the Cowgirls six going into halftime. Senior goalkeeper Lori Scheider continued her solid play this season collecting five saves in the opening period.

UW got on the scoreboard with their first goal at the 50:40 spot in the second period. Junior Mari Gomes found the back of the net on a great pass from freshman Christine Nagel. The goal is Gomes' team leading fifth of the season. Nagel would score the Cowgirls second and final goal just three minutes later at the 53:15 mark. The freshman, from Littleton, Colo., deflected an Air Force goal kick and then separated herself from two defenders and scored as Air Force goalkeeper J.J. Wolf came out of the box in an attempt to stop her. The goal was her second of the season.

The Cowgirl defense recorded their sixth shutout of the season, and third blanking of a MWC opponent. Scheider recorded eight saves on the day moving her season total to 108. Her six shutout's leads the conference. Senior defender Kara Walters was a key part of the Cowgirl "D" on Sunday by controlling the backfield and causing problems for the Air Force fowards.

"This team has been working so hard and they are finally coming together," added UW head coach Anne Moore. "They are more confident then they have ever been and they are hungry for a Mountain West Championship. We have BYU and Utah left and they will be two very tough games, but with the way our girls are playing and with their confidence being so high I think anything is possible and we have a great shot at a conference championship."

The Cowgirls will now prepare for their biggest games of the season as they take on BYU on Thursday, Oct. 23rd in Provo, Utah and then Utah on Saturday, Oct. 25th in Salt Lake City. The Cougars are ranked No. 12 in the nation but sit below the Cowgirls with a 3-1 record in the conference while the Utes are currently ranked No. 25 in the nation and are also undefeated, 4-0, in MWC play.
