Laramie, Wyo. - The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team won its final regular season game of the season with a 1-0 shutout over Denver University, Sunday afternoon at the UW Soccer Stadium. The Cowgirls close out the season with a 10-8 overall record, the best ever by a Cowgirl soccer team.

Seven Cowgirl seniors; Jennifer Barksdale, Tuva Gulbrandsen, Jennifer Kinner, Brenna Meadows, Renee Minero, Angela O'Dell and Lori Scheider finished their home careers with the win.

Gulbrandsen closed her Laramie career out with the game winning goal at the 56:07 mark of the second half. Meghan Racette notched her first career assist on the goal.

The Cowgirl defense held Denver scoreless on eight shots. Cowgirl goalkeeper Lori Scheider also finished her home career with a bang earning her seventh shutout of the season while making three saves.

Denver, whose overall record fell to 15-3, out shot the Cowgirls 8-7 in the match. They also took eight corner kicks to the Cowgirls one.

"I can't say enough about this group of seniors," said UW head coach Anne Moore. "I am so happy that they can leave on a winning note after all of the hard work they have put in. It is nice for them to be rewarded with such a successful season after all of the struggles they have seen.

"Barksdale and Kinner have been solid at defense from the beginning while Angela and Renee have been mainstays at midfield and contributed so much over their careers. Brenna has done some great things on offense, Lori has done amazing things in goal and what a way for Tuva to go out with the game winning goal today."

Unfortunately, senior Angela O'Dell had to leave the game, early in the first half, with a hip injury. Her status for the upcoming week is unknown.

"I definitely think the cold weather was a factor today," added Moore. "Overall I thought that both teams played well on defense. We were fortunate enough to capitalize on their mistake and put the ball in the back of the net."

The Cowgirls, who finished in a tie for second in the MWC with BYU, will enter this weeks MWC Championships as the three seed. They will face-off against New Mexico in the first round, Wednesday at 11:30 am. The Cowgirls defeated the Lobos 1-0 in Albuquerque earlier this season. The championships will run Wednesday through Saturday of this week in Salt Lake City, Utah.

"New Mexico is a tough team with a very organized defense and a good keeper," said Moore. "They have a great team work ethic and their offense can really make things happen. If we can stay solid in the back and create a lot of opportunities on offense, I think we have a very good chance of coming away with a win."
