Laramie, Wyo. -- The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team lost to New Mexico, 2-1 in double overtime, in the first round of the MWC Championships, Wednesday afternoon in Salt Lake City, Utah.

New Mexico scored the game winner with 3:31 left in the second overtime period. Coco D'Angelo scored the goal from ten yards out, on an assist from Erchen Theys at the 106:29 mark.

Wyoming jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, when Kristin Stangl converted a penalty kick at the 68:56 mark of the second half. New Mexico quickly answered on a goal by Kellisha Rendell at the 77:58 mark when she scored on a deflection from fifteen yards out. Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.

Neither team was able to score in the first overtime or the early moments of the second, as New Mexico outshot Wyoming 3-1 during the stretch.

New Mexico outshot the Cowgirls 15-9 in the contest with Cowgirl goalkeeper Lori Scheider making seven saves. New Mexico goalkeeper Kristen Winters earned the win for the Lobos making five saves.

The Cowgirls close out the 2003 season with an overall record of 10-9, the best finish ever by a Cowgirl Soccer team. Their second place regular season MWC finish was also the best finish in the programs nine year history.

On a positive note for the Cowgirls, Anne Moore was selected as the 2003 MWC Coach of the year, as selected by the MWC head coaches, last night. Three Cowgirls were named to the first team All-MWC team in sophomore Mercy Adetoye, redshirt freshman Kristin Stangl and senior goalkeeper Lori Scheider.
