The dawn of a new season began today as the Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team opened fall camp at the North 40 Practice Facility in Laramie, Wyo.

The Cowgirls began practice this morning with a fitness test in which every girl had to complete a mile run in under 6:30. After the fitness test, the Cowgirls participated in a series of small games, 1 vs. 1 competitions, 3 vs. 3 and 7 vs. 7 mini games so the players could get back into the swing of things while the coaches evaluated the squad.

"Our first day of practice went very well," head coach Anne Moore said. "We had a freshman in the championship of our 1 vs. 1 competition and the rest of the team looked strong. There were more girls that passed the fitness test than ever before and there are going to be some girls that will battle for starting positions."

Wyoming returns seven starters and 11 letterwinners including three starting midfielders, both starting forwards and the starting goalkeeper from the 2006 season. Second Team All-Mountain West Conference sophomore Emily Layton and MWC All-Tournament junior Amanda Lathrop headline the returning starters.

The Cowgirls will conduct two-a-days throughout the next two weeks in anticipation for the 2007 campaign. Wyoming will kickoff the season with two exhibition games against the University of Mary on August 24, at 3 p.m. and at the University of Denver on August 26, at 11 a.m. The Cowgirls will open the regular season at home against Western Carolina on August 31, at 4 p.m.

"We are going to work on implementing our system and building the team up in preparation for the upcoming season. We are excited about our girls and look forward to our home opener."
