Kati Gyulai

Kati Gyulai (Kà Tee U-la-ee) enters her fourth season as the head women's tennis coach at the University of Wyoming. She was named to the position on Sept. 9, 2008 and became just the fourth head women's tennis coach in Cowgirl history.

In 2011, head coach Kati Gyulai and the Wyoming tennis team carried over the momentum from the previous season. They posted a 14-9 record overall and a 3-5 mark in MWC action. The 14 victories tied the all-time victories for a season in school history along with recording their second straight winning season. The team also won their quarterfinal match of the 2011 MWC Tournament with a 4-3 victory against the third seeded and 50th ranked San Diego State Aztecs. They would fall in the semi-finals to the eventual tournament champion, Utah, who was the second seed and ranked 55th.

Three Cowgirls earned All-MWC honors for their accomplishments in 2011. Freshman Veronica Popovici was selected All-MWC in singles becoming the fifth Wyoming player in school history to earn First Team All-MWC honors. It's also the third straight year a Cowgirl has been named to the All-Conference team. The doubles team of Simona Synkova and Kim van Ginkel were also named All-MWC in doubles for the second year in a row. It's the first time in school history that feat had been accomplished.

The Cowgirls were ranked in the Campbell's/ITA ranking four times throughout the season including a school best 68th on March 22. They finished 74th in the season ending Campbell's/ITA rankings and third in the Mountain Region. The UW doubles team of Simona Synkova and Kim van Ginkel placed fourth amongst teams in the Mountain Region. They finished the season with a record of 21-10 overall and 5-3 in the league. After a solid freshman campaign, Veronica Popovici placed sixth in the region. She had an overall record of 28-9 for the year, which led to her selection on the All-Mountain West Conference Team.

It was a highly successful season in Gyulai's second year with the program. The team almost doubled their number of wins from the year before as they went 14-8 overall and 5-3 in the MWC to place third. The 14 overall wins and five conference victories were the most ever in school history, plus the third place finish was the highest a Wyoming team had ever placed in league play. They defeated three conference foes for the first time in school history as well with wins over BYU, New Mexico and San Diego State. Three Cowgirls garnered post season honors in 2010. Alexandra Kovacs was named First Team All-MWC in singles, while the team of Simona Synkova and Kim van Ginkel earned All-Conference honors in doubles. Three Cowgirls also earned MWC Player of the Week honors, Alexandra Kovacs, Sarah Summerfield and Kim van Ginkel.

For their efforts, the team finished ranked in both the NCAA Division I and Region plus three individuals were recognized in the rankings. As a team, the Cowgirls finished 73rd among 323 schools with Division I women's tennis, while placing sixth out of the 21 schools in the Mountain Region Rankings. The doubles team of Synkova and van Ginkel were ranked 59th nationally and fourth amongst teams in the Mountain Region. Alexandra Kovacs placed 19th in the region after a 21-15 record in her first season.

In her first season with the program, she led the team to an 8-16 record overall and a 1-7 mark in the Mountain West Conference. Her first regular season victory came against the Montana State Lady Cats on February 15, 2009, while earning a MWC win over Air Force (March 7, 2009). The team won their opening match of the 2009 MWC Tournament with a 4-3 victory over the Falcons as well. Junior Sarah Summerfield earned First Team All-MWC honors for the second time during her career.

She returned to her alma mater after spending the previous two seasons as the head coach of both Louisiana Lafayette's men's and women's tennis teams and one year as an associate head coach.

During the spring of 2008, Gyulai led the women's team to a 16-8 mark overall and an ITA national ranking of 64th during the spring season. On the men's side, they finished 7-12 overall, while Piotrek Banas achieved an ITA singles national ranking of 40 and was named First Team All-Sun Belt conference.

In the spring of 2007, the women's program reentered the ITA national rankings at No. 73 and finished the year with a 13-9 mark. Gyulai coached Myrthe Molenveld to a Louisiana's Sports Writers Associations' Freshman of the Year award.

For the men, they finished with 13-9 record in 2007. Piotrek Banas reached the quarterfinals of the ITA Regional Tournament, and won the UT-San Antonio Championship as well as the runner-up spot at the Louisiana-Lafayette Invitational Tournament. The doubles team of Shaun Ellison and Zack Taylor also reached the quarterfinals of the ITA Regional Tournament. Piotrek Banas and Shaun Ellison were named First Team All-Louisiana.

Gyulai spent the 2005-06 season as the associate women's head coach for the Louisiana-Lafayette women's tennis team. They finished the 2006 spring season ranked 73rd nationally with a 14-6 record. The team was ranked as high as 51st during the spring. It marked the first national ranking in the history of UL women's tennis. The doubles team of Tammy Day and Chanell Meijer were also nationally ranked 46th.

Prior to UL, Gyulai spent the 2004-05 campaign at fellow Sun Belt Conference member New Orleans as an assistant coach. That season, the UNO women's tennis team finished with a 14-4 overall record.

During the 2003-04 season, Gyulai served as an assistant coach with the men's and women's teams' at the University of Texas-Pan American.

Gyulai was a two-year letterwinner as a member of the University of Wyoming's tennis team from 2001-2003. In 2003, she earned her bachelor's degree in international studies with a concentration in Eastern Europe. She was named to the Mountain West Conference Academic All-Conference teams and was a member of the honor roll in 2002 and 2003. Gyulai was also a recipient of the Cowboy Joe Athletic Club, Rendel Family Athletic Scholarship.

Gyulai is a native Hungarian but was raised in Transylvania, Romania. She received her Master's in Business Administration from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in December 2007. She holds her USTPA Professional 1 certification, was named the 2010 Intermountain College Coach of the Year and is fluent in several languages.
