Popovici Receives MW Player of the Week Honors

It is the first honor for her career

SOPHOMORE (2011-12): An All-Mountain West selection in singles for the second year in a row, while being named to the All-Mountain West doubles team for the first time in her career. Continued to play solid tennis as she went 10-2 during the fall. She had a nine match winning streak during that time. Had a 3-1 record at the Mountain Regional tournament making it into the semifinals before falling to Alexandra Josifoska of UNLV. Finished with a solid 10-3 mark in doubles action. She and Simona Synkova went 9-1 which included a 5-0 record at the ITA Mountain Regional Tournament. With winning the title, they participated in the USTA National Indoor Championships and finished 1-1. Popovici went 10-12 in singles action during the spring at the number one position to finish with a 20-14 overall record. In league action, she went 3-4 with wins over Air Force, Boise State and Colorado State. Finished with an overall doubles record of 22-11 and 21-9 with Simona Synkova. They went 4-3 in Mountain West play on their way to earning honors. The pair were also ranked 44th heading into the spring and stayed among the Top 60 or better in the Campbell's/ITA rankings all eight weeks. Currently ranks 12th with 44 doubles wins and 15th in singles victories (48) in school history.

FRESHMAN (2010-11): Had a solid start to her career as she went 13-3 overall in singles play during the fall. She earned her first career victory over Lauren Mulhern of Colorado State, 6-0, 6-0, (9/16/10). Won her first four straight matches to begin the fall and had another seven match streak as well. Qualified for the Mountain Regional Tournament going 3-1 overall. She would make it into the round of eight eventually falling to Anastasia Putilina of Utah. She went 6-2 in doubles play and 3-0 with partner Carly Van Hollen. Continued the momentum into the spring as she won her first 10 of 13 matches, including a seven match winning streak. She finished dual play with a 15-6 mark and 28-9 overall. In league play, she went 5-3 at the number one position, which helped her earn MW honors for the first time in her career. In doubles play, Popovici went 22-8 for the year and 16-6 in dual play during the spring. She and partner Carly Van Hollen went 19-6 overall and 5-3 in MW play. They opened up the non-conference by winning eight of their first nine matches. She was selected Academic All-MW and Scholar-Athlete for the first time in her career.

HIGH SCHOOL: A top ranked junior and senior singles and doubles player. She was ranked 1,111 in the spring on the Sony Ericsson WTA tour, while her highest singles ranking was 808 in 2008. In doubles, her ranking on the tour was 934 in 2009.

PERSONAL: Born September 21, 1990 in Piatra Neamt, Romania. She is the daughter of Neculai and Mariana Popovici and has one sibling, Catalin. Majoring in family and consumer science (human nutrition and food).
