Three individuals on the Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team competed in the opening round of the singles qualifying at the 2008 Wilson ITA Central Region Tournament, on Wednesday, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Sophomore Rebecca Berger earned an opening three set victory, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5, over Brittany Baldy of Oklahoma in the opening round. In her second match she came up short against Klaudia Wlodarczyk of Boise State, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7). Carly Van Hollen lost her first round match against Elle Carney of BYU 2-6, 6-2, 10-3, while Brittany DeFelice fell to Jana Mackova of Boise State, 6-3, 6-3.

"It was a very good day for us overall, and we are still progressing as a team," said UW assistant coach Dean Clower. "Rebecca played really well in earning a first round match, and battled against a tough opponent in the second round."

All three players, plus junior Sarah Summefield will be back in action tomorrow morning. Summerfield will play in the main draw in singles play against Laura Boguet of New Mexico State. The doubles team of Brittany DeFelice and Carly Van Hollen will take on Tori Arneson and Laua Neal, while Rebecca Berger and Sarah Summerfield will go up against Galina Semenova and Maryna Tkachenkio of Oklahoma State.
