Susan Steadman enters her sixth season as head volleyball coach at the University of Wyoming. She was named head coach on Aug. 5, 1996, and is the ninth head volleyball coach in Cowgirl history. She recorded her first victory at Wyoming on Sept. 6, 1996 with a 3-1 win over UT-San Antonio, and her first conference win in the league was over the University of New Mexico, 3-2, on Sept. 21, 1996. In five years with the Wyoming Volleyball Program, Steadman has posted an overall record of 68-86 (.442) and an 33-39 (.458) mark in conference play. She has coached four All-Conference players in both the Western Athletic and Mountain West Conferences, including 1998 WAC-Mountain Division Player of the Year and First Team selection Jami Laya, and First Team All-MWC selection Melody Friehauf in 1999. Steadman arrived in Laramie with some impressive credentials. Prior to joining the Cowgirl program, she was the head coach at Marshall University. During her time at MU, Steadman posted a 37-32 mark, including a 25-11 record in 1995, a Southern Conference Tournament Championship and the school's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Steadman, 32 (born Aug. 9, 1969), resurrected the Marshall volleyball program in just two seasons. She became head coach there in April of 1994. Prior to her guiding Marshall to a conference tournament title and NCAA appearance in '95, Marshall had not had a winning season since 1988 -- seven seasons. Steadman earned Southern Conference Coach of the Year honors in '95 -- in only her second year as a Division I head coach. Prior to becoming the head coach at Marshall, Steadman served as an assistant at her alma mater, Mississippi State, for three seasons (1991-93). She was a four-year letterwinner in volleyball and also played basketball at MSU. In 1989 and '90, she was named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll for volleyball. Steadman completed a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1991, and added a master's degree in education and sports administration in 1994, earning both degrees from MSU. "I'm extremely excited about this upcoming season. We have a group of sophomores who have seen considerable playing time mixed with a group of talented freshmen who will push very hard to be on the court. Our one senior really knows the Mountain West Conference and should provide great leadership. With each member of our program filling roles at their best, the level of success will rise considerably. My hope is that we grow each day and complete hard with every opponent." |
