Tony Suñga is entering his second season as an assistant coach with the Wyoming Volleyball program. Suñga came to Wyoming from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa where he spent two seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. His duties included recruitment of student athletes, practice and match preparation along with the day to day operations of the program. It was his second stint with the Bulldogs as he also served as a graduate assistant with the program in 1991 and 1992. During that time, he was also the head coach of the USA Volleyball-Iowa High Performance team. He trained some of the top players in Iowa to compete in an international style of competition. Suñga also served as an educator in the Des Moines Public Schools, which he had done since 1992. From 2002-2006, he was the head coach and setter's coach for the Iowa Power Volleyball Alliance and also served as the head coach at Des Moines Lincoln High School (2001-04), which is the largest high school in the Des Moines Public School District. In 2004, he also served as a volunteer assistant coach at Iowa State. Prior to that, he spent seven years with the highly successful volleyball and basketball programs at Simpson College (Indianola, Iowa) as an assistant coach. Suñga is a 1988 graduate of Drake, earning his bachelor's degree in international relations and political science and his master's in teaching in 1992. As an undergraduate, he served as a manager for Drake men's basketball team under former coach Gary Garner. He also helped restart the Drake men's volleyball club and was a setter/middle blocker on the team. He has been a member of the USA-Iowa Region Volleyball Association since 1984 and was honored in 2006 by the Iowa Region of the United States Volleyball Association for Meritorious Service. Suñga has also been involved in several camps including Drake, Iowa HP and Simpson College among others. Suñga and his wife Melissa Boyer-Suñga, also a Drake graduate, have three sons Michael, Phillip and Daniel. |
