Cowgirl Volleyball Comes Up Short At Golden Gate Classic
Sept. 1, 2001
LARAMIE, Wyo. - WYOMING at Golden Gate Classic (San Francisco, Calif.)
Despite a good offensive effort, the Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (0-2 overall) suffered a four game loss (30-32, 29-31, 30-22, 28-30) to the Furman Paladins, in the consolation of the game, at the Golden Gate Classic in San Francisco. Furman's Abby Simon led the way for Furman with 19 kills and eight digs, and also hit .236 on the night. Cowgirl sophomore Michele Rauter tallied 19 kills, ten digs and hit .289 to lead the way for Wyoming, while senior Rachel Lau followed up a previous 12 kill match with 17 kills and five block assists. Despite out hitting the Paladins .201 to .149 and doubling them in blocks ten to five, the Cowgirls couldn't overcome some mistakes. "This is a case of not setting priorities and preparing ourselves for a match," stated head coach Susan Steadman. "We had the talent to win this match, but we still are inconsistent and haven't developed a chemistry between each other to what the other individuals are going to do. Our passing was very sporadic, and we certainly didn't come out with the intensity we had last night and that was a big key for the whole match."
"I thought Vanessa Latimer came in and played well defensively, and
really had a passing rhythm going. Offensively, Michele Rauter and
Rachel Lau had some good swings at the ball. Unfortunatley, our blocking
was passive and defensive followed behind it, and we didn't put together
a very good match."
Wyoming will host the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic next weekend, welcoming Wake Forest, Idaho State, UT-Arlington, and Oklahoma. The action will start on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m., and the Cowgirls opening up against the Mavericks of UT-Arlington at noon. |
