Sept. 24, 2001

LARAMIE, Wyo. - San Diego def. WYOMING 3-1 - Box Score

After almost a two week layoff, the Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team resumed their season in Laramie on Friday night. This was the first University of Wyoming Athletic event since the tragedies on the east coast, and the deaths of eight UW Cross Country and Track athletes last Sunday. They hosted the University of San Diego Toreros (7-2 overall) in a non-conference match-up, and unfortunately, the Cowgirls (4-3 overall) came up short, 3-1, by scores of 30-24, 30-23, 30-21, 30-26.

San Diego was led by Joycelyn Roy, who finished the night with 17 kills and 12 digs. Freshman Kristen Hurst also tallied 11 kills and 13 digs to help her team to the victory. The Toreros finished the night hitting .194 (67-35-165), along with 75 digs.

Despite outblocking the Toreros 13-4, the Cowgirls struggled hitting only .112 (52-33-169. Sophomore Michele Rauter finished the evening with 15 kills, 11 digs and hit .257. With 15 kills and hitting .235, senior Rachel Lau notched two block solos and six block assists.

"Our moral really went up and down over the last two weeks. I think we came out and played as well as can be expected based upon the fact we haven't been in competition since the Cowgirl Classic," said head coach Susan Steadman. "That wasn't my disappointment at all it was just the way we came out in game two. We really hit a lull and didn't take over and finish the match. The tragedies that hit both the east coast and here on campus have been quite an emotional experience and devastating to a point. For everyone coming out of our last matches, knowing what was ahead of us and being excited it has been disappointing and how everything has affected us. But the kids love playing together, they know they can be successful and I have no doubt we're going to comeback stronger than ever."

The Cowgirls run their record to 4-3 overall, and will host Saint Mary's (CA) tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
