Cowgirls Fall Short Against Aztecs
Sept. 30, 2001
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
*San Diego State def. Wyoming 3-1 - Box Score
The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (6-4 overall, 1-1 MWC) closed out the weekend with a four game loss (24-30, 18-30, 30-24) to the San Diego State Aztecs (9-3 overall, 3-1 MWC), on Sunday afternoon, in San Diego. The Cowgirls opened the first game with an early 4-1 lead, but the Aztecs came back to tie it at four all. It would stay close throughout with no team really taking control. With the score tied at 14-14, San Diego State would go on a 6-2 run to take the lead and eventually the game, 30-24. Game two saw the Cowgirls struggle as they fell behind early, 11-4. The largest lead for the Aztecs was 12 points as they took the second game, 30-18, and a 2-0 lead in the match. Wyoming responded in the third game by taking the lead, 7-3, at the beginning of the game. They would extend that margin to 18-14 and eventually 30-24 to take the game. The fourth game was never close as the Aztecs disposed of the Cowgirls by winning the game, 30-21, and the match 3-1. San Diego State was led by Katie Magnuson, who led the way with 18 kills and eleven digs. Zlatina Anguelova and Nicole Akporiaye also notched double-figures in kills to help the Aztecs to victory. As a team, they hit .287 (65-36-136) and outblocked the Cowgirls 10-4. Senior Rachel Lau was the highlight for the Cowgirls leading the way with 15 kills, one block assist and hitting .242 for the match. Wyoming struggled hitting .165 (50-28-133) on the afternoon, along with only four blocks. "I am very disappointed with our overall effort today," said head coach
Susan Steadman. "The 2001 season has been exciting for us because of one
major element -- our team effort. That was lacking in our performance
today. Most of the team was able to rally back in games three and four,
however, it just isn't going to be enough if we don't do it together. I
thought Rachel Lau gave a nice effort, but coming off the great win in
Vegas, I am extremely surprise we weren't more prepared for San Diego
State. Hopefully, we will learn from today and realize we can do
spectacular things when we all show up to play as a team, and that we
will struggle with when we play as individuals."
Wyoming runs their record to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the Mountain West Conference. They will host conference rivals Brigham Young and Utah next weekend. |
