The scoring stayed close throughout the first part of game one. With the score at 12-11, the Cowgirls took charge going on a 9-3 run to take a 21-14 lead. But, the Aztecs fought back scoring the next points nine to close the margin to one point. Wyoming seemed to take control again regaining a 26-22 advantage, but unfortunately, San Diego State would score the next eight out of ten points and win the game 30-28. In game two, the Aztecs jumped out to a 7-3 early lead. The Cowgirls would only get as close as 10-11 in the game, as San Diego State won the game 30-22 and take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Cowgirls would have to fight their way back in game three, as they fell behind early. With the score tied at 11-11, they would take a lead and seemed to get some momentum, but the Aztecs would once again make a comeback to take the lead. It would go back and forth, until Wyoming finally would come out on top 31-29. The Aztecs took over in the fourth game taking the lead from the
beginning and never looked back. They closed out the match winning the
game 30-20 and the match 3-1.
San Diego State was led by Rochelle Currier, who finished with a team high 19 kills, six digs and a .389 hitting percentage. As a team, the Aztecs hit .290 (74-27-162) on the evening, along with nine total team blocks. Three Cowgirls hit in double-figures on the night, including senior Rachel Lau. She finished with 17 kills, one block solo, six block assists and hit .379. Sophomore middle blocker Melissa Robinett also notched a career high 17 kills, along with a team high .419 hitting percentage. The Cowgirls hit .238 (66-30-151) on the evening, along with ten total team blocks. "It was really frustrating when we had a lead in the first game to breakdown in a pretty easy part of the game. San Diego State wasn't serving that tough and after we lost the lead we couldn't get it done," said head coach Susan Steadman. "That typically happens when you lose your focus, we couldn't pass the ball, and our offense suffered." "I thought we made some great plays tonight, certain parts of our game were good and then I was frustrated with other parts. Our middles had a phenomenal night and did their job. They hit well and put up good blocks. Our defensive specialists also had some good plays, and I was proud of how they played. There were just some other areas that were inconsistent." Wyoming will host the UNLV Rebels tomorrow night in the MPG at 8:00 p.m. |
