Cowgirls Close Out Weekend With A Loss To The Cougars
Nov. 3, 2001
Provo, Utah -- The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (8-12 overall, 3-8 in the MWC) closed out the weekend with a three game loss to the 16th ranked BYU Cougars (17-5 overall, 9-3), 30-16, 30-20, and 30-27, on Saturday night in Provo. The Cougars jumped out early in game one, as it was senior night, taking an 11-5 lead. Brigham Young would then proceed to go on an impressive 19-11 run to win the first game 30-16. The Cowgirls stayed close to start game two with a score of 8-9, but then the Cougars went on an 10-3 run to take a 19-11 advantage. After scoring the next 11 of 20 points and allowing the Cowgirls to only score nine, the Cougars would take the game 30-20 and a 2-0 lead in the match. Wyoming hung tough in the third game and several times were only down by one point. But they were didn't have enough to take over the veteran BYU team, who would win the game 30-27 and take the match 3-0. Senior Jackie Bundy led the way for the Cougars, as she finished the night with 12 kills and seven digs. As a team, BYU hit .294 (53-21-109) on the evening and outblocked the Cowgirls nine to four. Wyoming was led by senior Rachel Lau, who tallied a team high ten kills, along with four digs and one block solo. The Cowgirls struggled hitting only .070 (35-27-114) on the evening. "I'm really baffled by our inability to start matches aggressively," said head coach Susan Steadman. "I think it still has a lot to do with the fluctuation of individual play. Rachel Lau continues to be a leader on this team. BYU is a very strong team that we have to more aggressive against especially on their home court. My hope is that we will be more aggressive against Colorado State on Tuesday, and finish the last three matches strong at home."
The Cowgirls will now host Colorado State, New Mexico and Air Force
next week as they close out the regular conference season.
