Cowgirls Close Out Regular Season With A Victory
Nov. 10, 2001
Laramie, Wyo. -- In convincing fashion, the Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (9-14 overall, 4-10 in the MWC) closed out the regular conference season with a three game sweep, 30-16, 30-27, 30-21, over the Air Force Academy Falcons (2-20 overall, 0-14 in the MWC). The Cowgirls dominated the match from the beginning, trailing only one time during the entire match. Air Force made it interesting in the second game, but Wyoming was just to strong. Air Force was led by Delavane Diaz, who finished the night with a team high 21 kills and .208 hitting percentage. As a team, the Falcons struggled hitting only .090 (37-26-122) and recording five total team blocks. Senior Rachel Lau closed out her last match at home by leading the Cowgirls with 14 kills and a .367 (14-3-30) hitting percentage. Sara Maytorena and Jill Roslund also recorded ten kills, while Maytorena led the team with 13 digs. Wyoming finished the evening hitting .263 (51-20-118), plus recording six total team digs. "I'm just thankful for the win tonight," said head coach Susan Steadman. "We all knew we needed a victory and wanted to end the regular season with a win going into the conference tournament. The tournament is a whole new season and that is what we will focus on after we enjoy this one tonight."
The Cowgirls will begin MWC tournament play on Thursday, Nov. 15, in
Provo, Utah. Wyoming will likely be seeded sixth, and an opponent has
not been determined.
